Should You Trust Auto Repair Shop Recommendations from AI

April 29, 2026

This is a subtitle for your new post

In the last year or two, we have noticed a new trend in our service lobby. Customers are walking in with their phones out, showing us a screen full of text generated by an artificial intelligence. They have typed in their symptoms, like a weird squeak when turning or a vibration at fifty miles per hour, and the AI has spit out a list of exactly what is wrong and how much it should cost to fix. It is fascinating technology, and we certainly understand the appeal of getting an instant answer before you even leave your driveway.

However, as people who spend our days covered in grease and looking at real-world mechanical failures, we want to have a heart-to-heart about this. While AI is a brilliant tool for many things, trusting it with the life of your engine or the safety of your brakes is a bit like asking a librarian to perform heart surgery just because they have read a lot of medical books. We think you should use AI as a starting point, but we also think you should be ready to challenge its advice with a healthy dose of skepticism.

The Problem With Virtual Diagnostics

An AI is essentially a very sophisticated guessing machine. It looks at millions of pages of data from the internet to find patterns. If you tell it your car is leaking green fluid, it knows that coolant is green, so it tells you your radiator is broken. On paper, that makes perfect sense. In the real world, that green fluid might be coming from a loose hose clamp that costs five dollars, or it could be dye from an air conditioning leak that the previous owner added.

The AI cannot smell the fluid, it cannot feel the texture, and it certainly cannot see the tiny crack in the plastic housing that a human eye can spot in seconds. When you rely solely on a computer model, you are missing out on the physical context that defines auto repair.

Why You Should Challenge the AI

When you get a diagnostic result from a computer, your first move should be to question it. AI often suffers from what we call hallucinations, where it sounds incredibly confident while being completely wrong. It might suggest a repair that does not even apply to your specific year and model, or it might give you price estimates that are years out of date.

  • Check the Source: Ask the AI where it got its information. If it is pulling from a random forum post from 2008, the advice is probably not relevant to your modern vehicle.

  • Verify the Parts: AI often suggests replacing an entire component when only a small seal or sensor is needed. Challenge the idea that an entire system is dead just because one symptom has appeared.

  • Ask About Alternatives: If an AI gives you one answer, ask it for three more. This often reveals that the computer is just picking the most common answer rather than the right one for your situation.

The Human Element of Auto Repair

There is an old saying in our shop that a computer can tell you what happened, but a mechanic can tell you why it happened. An AI might correctly identify that your brakes are wearing unevenly, but it won't notice that you have a habit of riding the brake pedal or that your local roads are recently salted, causing extra corrosion.

Our technicians use their ears, eyes, and even their sense of touch to understand the health of your car. We look for the story the car is telling us through the wear patterns on your tires and the color of your oil. This level of nuanced understanding is something a chat window simply cannot replicate. We are not just looking for a code to clear. We are looking for a way to keep you safe on the road for the next ten thousand miles.

Using Technology the Right Way

We are not saying you should delete your AI apps or stop using Google to learn about your car. Being an informed car owner is a great thing. When you use these tools to learn the vocabulary of auto repair, it makes our job easier because we can have a more detailed conversation with you. Use the AI to gather questions, not answers.

Bring those questions to us. If the AI said you need a new transmission, tell us that, and let us show you why it might just be a simple fluid flush or a shift solenoid. We love it when customers are engaged and curious, as long as they remember that the final word should come from someone who actually has their hands on the vehicle.
